Who is eligible for a professional designation?

All SAFMA members who work as Facilities Managers can apply for a professional designation based on their qualifications and years of experience; or under the Grandfather clause based on years of experience and competencies.

How to apply for a Professional Designation in the Facilities Management Field

If you are not yet a SAFMA member please apply by clicking here, completing the form, and making payment of your annual subscription fee.

Once you have received confirmation of your membership, or if you are an existing member, you can now apply for a professional designation. To do so complete the application form here and upload the required documentation, which includes:
  • Your membership confirmation letter
  • The signed code of professional conduct
  • A certified copy of your ID or passport
  • Certified copies of all your certificates/qualifications
  • Your portfolio of evidence as requested under Section E of the form
Once the documentation is received, an invoice for the assessment fee will be sent to you.

Applications will not be processed until proof of payment of this invoice is received. Please send this to xxxxxxx.

Application Process

  1. Complete an application form and submit with relevant documentation as spelled out in the application form
  2. An initial assessment is done to ensure all the relevant information is included and verified
  3. An invoice is sent to the applicant
  4. Once proof of payment is received, a panel of two assessors assesses the application and makes a recommendation. In case of questions they may request further information or arrange for an interview of the applicant
  5. If both assessors are in agreement, the decision goes to the Chairman of the Committee to ratify
  6. If there is no agreement, the application will go to a third assessor and the Chairman of the Committee
  7. The applicant is informed of the decision via email
  8. Chairman to sign certificate
  9. The applicant will be informed when the certificate it ready for collection
  10. Application process will take no more than eight weeks from receipt of payment if there are no questions or other delays

What do I need to do to keep my designation?

  1. Ensure your SAFMA membership is current at all times. There is an annual fee for membership and an invoice and reminder will be sent to you
  2. Ensure your contact details are up to date on the SAFMA database at all times
  3. Regularly update your skills and knowledge, and input the information onto your profile on the SAFMA database annually
  4. Apply and pay for re-registration with SAFMA timeously, at least one month before the expiry of your current period. Your designation is valid for a period of 5 years from the date of the certificate

CPD Requirements

Members will be required to continuously update their knowledge and skills through Continued Professional Development and will need to acquire a total of 50 points over a 2 year period (1 hour = 1 point), which translates into 25 points per year. All points must be verifiable and can fall under either developmental or work-based categories. If more than the required points are acquired in a 1year period, a maximum of 5 points may roll over to the following year.

Developmental
  • Attendance at conferenes, congresses, workshops, lectures, seminars, courses, post-graduate qualifications, lecturing, training (external and-inhouse); Work-Based (maximum 10 points per year)
  • Mentoring, publication of articles, reading articles, self-study, community work, 800 hours appropriate FM work

It is the member’s responsibility to ensure that they apply for re-registration with SAFMA timeously, at least one month before the expiry of their current period, and that SAFMA receives the details of their CPD.
